Drones Take Flight in Wajir to Support Healthcare Delivery

This Madaraka Day, we showcased a demo drone delivery of medical supplies in Wajir before President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Health CS Aden Duale, and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi.

The demo showed how drone technology can help solve one of the biggest challenges facing healthcare in remote areas; getting essential medical supplies to hospitals on time.

The President learnt how the drone operates and transports equipment, as part of a new system designed to support health facilities in hard-to-reach regions. These include areas affected by poor road networks, adverse weather conditions, insecurity, or long travel distances like Wajir, Samburu, Lamu, Kajiado, Marsabit, Mandera and more.

The drone can carry up to 6kg over 40km. Bigger models can conduct airdrops of up to 160km over 250km. “This drone can carry up to 5-6 blood bags and transport them to Griftu County Hospital, where they may be needed urgently,” said Alex Mwirigi, Director of Lab Services at Wajir County Referral Hospital.

The demonstration came during the President's visit to Wajir to officially launch the new Accident and Emergency Complex at Wajir County Referral Hospital. The facility includes a modern operating theatre and an advanced CT Scan machine that we recently installed.

The drone delivery system will help hospitals maintain continuity of services by ensuring critical consumables and laboratory supplies are available when needed. Instead of waiting days for deliveries, facilities will be able to receive urgent supplies within a much shorter time.

Working together with Cyberspace Technologies, we will monitor stock levels and consumable usage across participating health facilities. When shortages are detected, drones can be deployed to deliver the required supplies directly to the affected hospitals.

The initiative is made possible through partnerships with VersaDrones and Wings For Aid, whose technology and expertise support the drone operations.

As healthcare systems continue to expand into underserved areas, drone technology has the potential to become a vital tool in ensuring life-saving supplies reach the people who need them most.
