Lab, Theatre Installations Now Live in Turkana County

Lodwar - September 11, 2026

Turkana County has received its first equipment installations under the National Equipment Service Program (NESP), with Sunview Medipro installing fully equipped laboratories and theatres at Lodwar County Referral Hospital and Sub-County hospitals across the county.

The installations have covered Lodwar, Lokichar, Lokitaung, Kanamkemer, Kakuma and Lopiding hospitals.

At Lodwar County Referral Hospital, two laboratories have been equipped to support both inpatient and outpatient services, alongside four fully-equipped theatres. Nine laboratory machines have been installed, including biochemistry, hematology and electrolyte, immunoassay analysers, microbiology and urinalysis machines.

For Lokichar Sub-County Hospital, the installations mark the establishment of its first functioning laboratories.

“Turkana is truly a hardship area. The logistics were difficult and delivery took up to two days. Some of the items had to be transported in special cold-chain shipping boxes to preserve them,” said Steve Biko, Regional Manager, South Rift Region.

The new equipment replaces or supplements older machines that many facilities had been relying on, improving their capacity to provide services locally.

The Lodwar installations follow a visit by the hospital’s CEO, Dr Nancy Nyanga, to the Sunview Medipro exhibition booth during the Kenya Health Summit 2026 on August 18.

The equipment was received by Turkana CECM Dr Joseph Epem and Dr Nancy Nyanga, who welcomed the installations and expressed their appreciation for the NESP programme.

The machines were installed by engineers Kenneth Opiyo and Dennis Mutai (theatre) and Allyster Brian and Andrew Mulwa (Lab).

Following the installations at Lodwar, additional equipment requisitions have been received from facilities in Katilu, Lokichar and Lokitaung.

The installations are expected to reduce referrals and improve access to healthcare services in Turkana and neighbouring counties.

Nurses and technicians have also been trained on the operation of the newly installed equipment.

The Turkana installations bring Sunview Medipro’s NESP reach to 46 of Kenya’s 47 counties. The company will continue providing maintenance, consumables and technical support to ensure equipment remains operational and available to patients.
