Sunview Medipro Begins Installation of Modern Theatres Across Kenya

Sunview Medipro International has kicked off the installation of modern, fully-equipped operating theatres across county and sub county hospitals, under the National Equipment Service Program (NESP), a government initiative designed to improve access to quality healthcare through modern technology.

So far, 10 new theatres have successfully been installed in Kajiado, Kirinyaga ,Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Kwale, Tharaka Nithi and Wajir (3). Each installation is designed to boost surgical capacity, reduce delays and improve patient outcomes in underserved regions.

Impact of the New Operating Theatres Reduced Mortality Rates The availability of modern theatres means patients no longer face life-threatening delays caused by equipment shortages or transfers to distant facilities. Faster interventions, especially for cases like trauma, maternal emergencies and surgical conditions significantly reduce preventable deaths.
Increased Access for Citizens
Communities that previously lacked surgical services can now receive treatment closer to home. This reduces travel costs, minimizes treatment delays and ensures equitable access to quality healthcare for more citizens. Emergency Cases With fully equipped theatres, hospitals can now manage emergency cases on-site, reducing the need to transfer patients to referral hospitals. This is important especially for obstetric emergencies, road accidents and acute surgical conditions where minutes matter.

County Health Leaders Praise the Initiative During a recent installation in Kitengela Sub-County Hospital, Kajiado Health CECM Alex Kilowua described the upgrade as transformative for the region. “Through the NESP program, we’ve been able to install a number of machines in Kajiado County, including this new theatre. This program that allows hospitals to get equipment on a need-basis is something that is making health a reality.” The hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr. Veronica Abuto, highlighted the facility’s workload, noting that it handles up to 500 deliveries monthly, serving mothers from Kajiado, Machakos and Nairobi. “All along we had one operating theatre in place. With the new theatre, we are going to address the issues of maternal health, making sure that our mothers go back home healthy and with healthy babies,” she said. Training & Capacity Building As part of the program, Sunview Medipro trains all theatre personnel including surgeons, nurses, anaestheticians and biomedical engineers to ensure safe and efficient use of the equipment. The company provides equipment for General theatre, Orthopedic theatre and paediatric theatre. The comprehensive training ensures that facilities not only receive modern equipment but also have teams capable of delivering high-quality surgical care.
