Medical laboratory and theatre equipment rollout in Mombasa

50 Facilities in Mombasa Get Advanced Lab & Theatre Equipment

50 facilities in Mombasa are set to benefit from advanced laboratory and operating theatre equipment supplied by Sunview Medipro.

President William Ruto on October 1, 2026 flagged off 8 trucks ferrying the equipment from Ronald Ngala Primary School grounds, alongside Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir.

Sunview has rolled out 12 operating theatres and 108 laboratory machines in a bid to expand surgical capacity and bring specialized healthcare closer to patients.

Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital (CGTRH) received eight fully-equipped operating theatres and two fully-equipped laboratories. Additional theatres were ferried to Mrima Maternity Hospital, Port Reitz and Tudor Sub-County Hospitals.

The laboratory equipment includes biochemistry, hematology, electrolyte, and immunoassay analyzers as well as microbiology and urinalysis equipment.

Lower-level health facilities have received equipment based on their specific diagnostic needs and include health centres in Bamburi, Likoni, Mvita, Mwembe Tayari, Jomvu, Shanzu and Shimo La Tewa among other areas.

Installation Begins in Facilities

Sunview biomedical engineers have been deployed across the county to facilitate rapid installation, commissioning and operationalization of the equipment. Installation began immediately after the flag off.

Sunview CEO Sirat Amin says the company aims to complete installation and have the equipment running in less than two weeks.

“The machines will be installed over the next 10 days in all 50 hospitals to ensure patients can start receiving high-quality medical services without having to travel far,” said Amin.

Installation of theatres are ongoing at the Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital, Port Reitz and Mrima Maternity Hospital, and laboratory equipment in lower level facilities.

Gov announces free medical services in Msa

The rollout comes at a significant time for healthcare access in Mombasa, after Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir announced that all medical services in facilities are free for the month of October.

“Medical services will be free in all facilities including Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital in honor of Baba (Raila Odinga) who was a champion of Universal Health Coverage,” said Sharrif during a meeting with Sunview and county health officials at his office in Mombasa.

Patients will receive laboratory, diagnostics, imaging, MRI, and surgical services at no cost until October 31, 2026.

Gov Nassir added that the county will expect a huge turnout of patients wanting to get tested, noting that there is also a backlog of patients who need theatre services, specifically orthopedic surgeries.

“My wish is to have facilities in Mombasa to be the leading in imaging, diagnostic and surgical services,” said Gov Nassir.

2 years of Installation

As Sunview comes closer to hitting the 2-year mark, the company remains committed and motivated to transform healthcare in Kenya through supply and installation of high-quality medical equipment.

Sunview's support model includes installation, commissioning, technical support and maintenance, with the company maintaining regional support capacity, by setting up centres in different regions to provide faster and more reliable support to health facilities.
